"The world has changed in the hundred years you've been gone." —King Bumi, talking to Aang.
This is more true than we see in canon, according to FND. Here, I'll show you the changes we've made to the world of Avatar.
Let's start with the biggest (and only so far) change—the Air Nomads' survival.
First up, the evidence.
When Aang returned to the Southern Air Temple, he discovered the the Fire Nation had in fact found it—and signs of the ensuing battles—and assumed that they had found the others as well. While this is true, let's take a look at what we heard from the Mechanist at the Northern Air Temple.
"…A long time ago—but not a hundred years—my people became refugees after a terrible flood. My infant son, Teo, was badly hurt and lost his mother. I needed somewhere to rebuild, and I stumbled across this place. Couldn’t believe it! Everywhere, pictures of flying people! But empty! Nobody home!"
Sounds more like the place was abandoned than attacked by the Fire Nation, doesn't it? Evacuated, perhaps?
"It’s filled to the brim with natural gas. Came across it my first time here. Unfortunately, I was carrying a torch at the time. Nearly blew myself and the whole place even more sky high! Thought my eyebrows would never grow back! Anyway, there’s a vital problem that needs solving. From time to time we have gas leaks and they’re nearly impossible to find."
"So this place is an explosion waiting to happen?"
"Yes, until I figure out how to locate something I can’t see, hear, smell or touch."
Gas=air, torch=fire. Airbenders willing to live with the weight of having possibly blown up a thousand people may have bended the gas into the room as a defense mechanism of sorts against Firebenders. They were clever about it too, made sure that they wouldn't know the danger was there until it was too late.
"It was about a year after we moved here. Fire Nation soldiers found our settlement. You were too young to remember this tale. They were going to destroy everything, burn it to the ground. I pleaded with them, I begged them to spare us. They asked what I had to offer. I offered… my services. You must understand, I did this for you!"
Sounds like the Fire Nation had only just discovered the Northern Temple, doesn't it?
Now that I've provided the evidence, here's the timeline (This timeline will not be altered by OC's who may have been involved in it; timeline only contains events related to the Air Nomads):
100 years ago — Afiko betrays the Air Nomads. Fire Nation attack on Southern Air Temple.
98 years ago — Fire Nation attack on Eastern Air Temple.
95 years ago — Fire Nation attack on Western Air Temple. Afiko dies.
73 years ago — Northern Air Temple evacuated. Three chosen Nomads sent to get a few allies from the other Nations. Construction on the Central Air Temple begins in the mountains about fifty miles away from an Earth Kingdom Base.
72 years ago — Around twenty insignificant Earthbenders begin to help with the Central Temple. Kuzon and his family also take part as the Firebenders of the operation, along with Fire Sage Shyu's father. Around fifteen Waterbenders from the Northern Tribe also volunteer.
62 years ago — Central Temple completed. Description below.
10 years ago — Norther Temple re-occupied by the Mechanist.
9 years ago — Fire Nation finally finds the Northern Temple, but spares them in exchange for the Mechanist's services.
Present — Aang released from his iceberg and the story begins.
The Central Air Temple is partly underground. Most of it is built in the traditional fashion like the other Temples, but there is a secret area underground that can only be accessed through a special door known as the Four Nations Door. Only a fully realized Avatar can open the door single-handedly, otherwise, it requires an Airbender, Waterbender, Earthbender, and Firebender to work together—this door was designed by Shyu's father. Thanks to their Earthbending allies, the Temple is completely inaccessible without passing through this door or having a Sky Bison. Secret tunnels placed throughout the Earth Kingdom lead to the door. Once through the door, there's a tunnel leading up to the temple. There are secret tunnels in Omashu and Ba Sing Se, as well as many random uninhabited areas that travelers might occasionally pass by. One tunnel goes straight through the ocean to Kyoshi Island, although nobody from the village knows of its existence.
